The Cathedral is a microcosm of an amazing history of Lisbon involving Kings, Popes and the Moors, all of whom have had a massive influence on this intriguing city. Although in it's present state the cathedral is a Roman Catholic institution, this was not always the case. From the 8th to 12th century Portugal was under Arabic rule and was essentially a Muslim state which tolerated Christians. In 1147 and backed by Rome there was a revolt which took Lisbon and Portugal back into the control of the Catholic Church.
