25th of April Bridge

Why does the 25th of April Bridge resemble the Golden Gate Bridge?

The 25th of April Bridge was completed in 1966 and was originally named after the dictator, Salazar.

The bridge got its unusual name after the successful Portuguese Carnation Revolution of 25th April 1974 which overthrew the government in a peaceful coup.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a well-known and iconic structure, and its design has inspired other bridge projects worldwide. It's possible that the 25th of April Bridge drew inspiration from the Golden Gate Bridge due to its successful design and engineering.

If you think that the 25th of April Bridge resembles the Golden Gate Bridge, then your comparison is correct. Both bridges are suspension bridges, instantly recognizable by their iconic towers and cables. They are both painted the exact same colour, ‘International Orange’ and this distinctive colour helps the bridge to be more visible, especially in fog.

Along with the similar appearances both bridges are located in regions of high possible seismic activity and their designs are almost identical. To ensure the 25th of April Bridge has solid foundations, the south tower extends for 80 metres below the water level, which to this day, is still a world record. The bridge spans 2.5 kilometres and is longer than that of the Golden Gate. It has six lanes of traffic on the upper deck and two railway lines on the lower deck.

At the foot of the bridge, on the Lisbon side of the River Tagus, you’ll also find a dock and marina called Doca or Docks. Here you’ll find numerous restaurants and bars catering for all tastes and pockets, including fantastic seafood restaurants, an Argentinian steak house and a very affordable Italian restaurant which is perfect for that family meal with the kids.

Pilar 7 Bridge Experience

Recently the local authorities have installed an elevator for visitors who would like to experience the bridge in more detail and learn more about its history. The elevator is located at the bottom of one of the main pillars close to the river on the Lisbon side and brings you to a viewing platform at the top of the bridge. The views over the river are incredible. The attraction is called Pilar 7 Bridge Experience and make sure to add the “Virtual Tour” to your ticket, it is well worth the little extra.

Entry to the elevator tour is free with the Lisboa Card which you can purchase in the link below.

25th of April is now a National Holiday in Portugal and is called Dia da Liberdade or Freedom Day.
