Bairro Alto

The Bohemian district of Lisbon that comes alive after dark

Bairro Alto is the bohemian district of Lisbon and offers up quite different experiences by day and night

Bairro Alto is a network of narrow roads and lanes, the roads running perpendicular to the river and the lanes cut parallel to the river. The name Bairro Alto translates to High Neighbourhood and the district was built under an urban expansion outside the historic walls of Lisbon in the 16th Century.

In Bairro Alto you’ll find small shops selling bohemian products, both local and international. During the day it’s pretty quiet and as you wander through the cobbled roads and lanes you will find yourself popping in and out of interesting shops as well as squeezing onto the footpaths to avoid the small delivery vans and trucks beeping their way through a day's work. At night time, especially the weekends, Bairro Alto comes alive when the crowds make their way to the bars and clubs, be warned, it can be really busy in peak season.

Bairro Alto is geared towards a younger culture in the late evening but there are a multitude of restaurants and tapas bars in this district to kick off your night. Be sure to have a wander around Bairro Alto, there are some great little shops and you'll be sure to find something of interest.

Bairro Alto is full of charm, character and characters. Our favourite bar is located here, Bar Janela d'Atalaia.
