The Oceanarium

This Lisbon aquarium is ranked in the Top 3 in Europe

Located in the district of Parque das Nações and close to downtown Lisbon, the Oceanarium was completed in 1998 to coincide with the Lisbon World Expo.

The Oceanarium is one of the largest in Europe and it’s main tank holds 5 million litres of water and hosts up to 100 species. The vast area accommodates underwater glass tunnels and four large viewing windows which measure 49m2 each. In this tank you can view sharks, sunfish, rays, barracudas, groupers, and moray eels. One of the main attractions is the large sunfish.

There are also four other exhibit areas where you view playful otters, smaller fish, crustaceans (including Spider Crabs), jellyfish and corals.

If you looking to do something completely different you can book yourself and the kids in to sleep overnight or the Oceanarium prefers to say, “sleep with the sharks”. A bonus of doing this is that you then have the entire Oceanarium to view before the doors open to the public the next morning. (costs €60 per person)

It’s vey easy to get to the Oceanarium, just a short Metro journey on the Red Line to the beautiful Oriente station. Otherwise it’s a short taxi ride.

The tour of the Lisbon Oceanarium takes about 2 hours and there are lots of things to do in the Expo district including a cable car ride which is adjacent.
