Lisbon Dolphin Watch

Lisbon - The only European capital city where you can observe dolphins in the wild

The city of Lisbon sits on the mouth of the Tagus River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean and although dolphins are not permanent residents on the river they are regular visitors to Lisbon. This is a relatively recent phenomime with “common” dolphins sightings increasing since 2020. Occasionally there are sighing’s of “bottle nose” dolphins and sometimes even a friendly shark.

Oceanographic conditions, including water temperature and currents, can influence the presence of marine life in the water around Lisbon, including dolphins. The favorable conditions in the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon may also attract dolphins, as the ocean provides an abundant supply of food for the them with fish and squid being plentiful. Some areas along the coast may serve as breeding and calving grounds for certain dolphin species. Dolphins often seek out safe and relatively shallow waters for these activities and females, with baby and juvenile calves that also come to learn how to hunt.

The period from late spring through summer (May to September) is often considered the best time for dolphin watching in Lisbon. During these months, the weather is typically warmer, and sea conditions are more favorable. Many dolphin species are more active in these seasons so suggest that you book your dolphin tours during this period.

Always book your dolphin tours with reputable tour operators and we have provided a link below to do just that.

Since you are out on the water alongside Lisbon, you’ll also get great views of the city from your boat, including up close to the 25th of April Bridge, Belem Tower, and the impressive Monument of Discoveries.

Keep in mind that while the warmer months are generally more favorable, dolphins are wild animals, and sightings are never guaranteed. It's also essential to choose responsible and eco-friendly dolphin-watching tours that prioritize the well-being of the animals and their natural habitat. Before planning your trip, check with local authorities or tour operators for the latest information on dolphin activity in the region.
