Parque das Nações

This is the Park of Nation - An architectural delight constructed for Expo ‘98.

Parque das Nações is translated to English as the Park of Nations and this Lisbon district was once a wasteland before its development was completed in 1998 for the World Expo which the city of Lisbon hosted. It’s now home to over 30,000 people, has a vast shopping centre and lots of places to eat along the river.

It’s an interesting district of Lisbon, located approx. 5 km from the city centre and is home to many of Lisbon’s big events such as the Super Bock Super Rock concerts. Out here you’ll also find the Lisbon Oceanarium, which is one of the worlds largest aquariums, plus the Telecabine cable car ride, the Myriad hotel with its revolving rooftop bar, Lisbon’s largest Casino and plenty of street art sculptures. A visit to the Oceanarium and ride on the cable cars is a must do when visiting here.

You’ll notice a long bridge spanning the Tagus river and named after one of Portugal’s renowned explorers, it’s called the Vasco da Gama bridge and was also opened as part of Expo ‘98. The bridge spans 12.3 km, has six lanes and is the second longest bridge in the EU.

While in this neighborhood, check out the giant Iberian Lynx Cat which is made from wheelie bins and plastics.

You can get to Parque das Nações by train or Metro and make sure to check out the incredible Oriente train station. The station was designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava and depicts a canopy of palm trees with Gothic arches throughout.
