The Pena Palace is the jewel of Sintra and one site that every visitor to the area must visit. It’s vibrant terraces and towers protrude from a high mountain top and a tour of this Moorish palace will bring you through centuries of Portuguese history. The palace was occupied by nobility until 1910 when the fled to Brazil to avoid an impending revolution. Thankfully Pena Palace has been meticulously restored to its former romantic glory.

Pena Palace is the most visited site in Sintra so make sure to put it on your to-do list first before it gets too busy. There are shuttle buses and the base of the hill which will take you to the entrance of the palace for a nominal fee and will definitely be a welcome site in the hotter summer months.

Sintra can get very busy with tourists and for good reason, it truly is a world class destination. But to save a lot of time you need to book your tickets before you get there and avoid unnecessary queuing.
