Principe Real

Principe Real is a stylish Lisbon district by day or night

Principe Real is full of charm and is the ‘on trend’ district in Lisbon. For fashion and food, don’t miss out on this district.

Principe Real is a relatively small district in Lisbon but it’s packed full of high end shops and quality restaurants, there is a reason that’s it is the Royal District. Our favourite time to visit Lisbon is in May when the trees bloom with a purple flower and Principe Real shines at its best then. Just a short stroll down hill from the main street called Rua Dom Pedro V , you’ll find the the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcantara where you’ll have incredible vistas across Rossio and the Castelo São Jorge.

At the opposite end of Rua Dom Pedro V. there is a magnificent garden called Jardim do Principe. Have a stroll through this garden and the first thing you’ll come across is a one hundred year old Mexican Cypress tree. The tree is low off the ground but it's branches spread so wide for such a small tree that they are supported by a metal frame. There is also a fantastic cafe called Esplanada located in the garden which is especially nice for breakfast. On the perimeter of Jardim do Principe, you’ll often find a small street market.

Look over the other side of the street and on the corner is a wonderful turreted building, which again is a nod to the Moorish history of Lisbon. Inside is a small shopping centre called Embaixada, it’s well worth a look.
