Lisbon Cathedral

This cathedral is the great Lisbon survivor

The Lisbon Cathedral is a microcosm of an amazing history of Lisbon involving Kings, Popes and the Moors, all of whom have had a massive influence on this intriguing city.

Currently the Lisbon Cathedral is a Roman Catholic institution but this was not always the case. From the 8th to 12th century Portugal was under Arabic rule and was essentially a Muslim state which tolerated Christians. In 1147 and backed by Rome there was a revolt which took Lisbon and Portugal back into the control of the Catholic Church. Although damaged, the Cathedral has managed to survive several earthquakes and is a mix of multiple architectural styles.

The Cathedral marks the entrance to the district of Alfama, which is the medieval part of Lisbon. Just vere to the left of the Cathedral and you can meander through this ancient part of Lisbon.
